The Narangba Irradiation Plant

Residents of Caboolture Shire north of Brisbane in Queensland have their hands full with a proposal by Steritech to establish a nuclear irradiation plant in Narangba. The proposal has been approved by the Caboolture Shire Council after a hasty 'consultation' process which was conducted in a way as to sideline opposition to the plan.

The Council had been negotiating with Steritech since January 1999, yet the public was not informed until July 2000. Approval for the plant was then granted by the council on 31st August, despite submissions against the proposal outnumbering those in favour by 28 to 7. Despite repeated calls for public meetings and more meaningful consultation by alarmed residents, the Council has been tight lipped in its support for the plant. The campaign has now gone national, with anti-nuclear campaigners across the country appreciating the importance of the Steritech proposal.

The facility would use gamma-ray emitting Cobalt 60 sources to sterilise items for any number of uses. Chief among the stated benefits of this kind of plant is the potential to irradiate the FOOD we eat.

Food Irradiation
Blasting food with ionising radiation supposedly kills harmful bacteria and fungi and improves shelf life. As it turns out, the truth is much more complex…read on.
