Late in 1997, the Mirrar people on whose land the proposed Jabiluka mine is situated, demonstrated against the continued operation of the nearby Ranger uranium mine. Mirrar opposition to uranium mining in Kakadu catalysed the rest of the Australian community to oppose the mining, and Jabiluka was blockaded the following year.
