June 2001 Update
CANNWA FINDS A GOOD FAMILY HOME

CANNWA has moved into ENVIRONMENT HOUSE - a shop, house, backyard and useful sheds at 61 Eighth Ave Maylands, opposite Commonwealth Bank and Post Office. It's only 200 metres from Maylands Station which re-opens in July. (For now, you get off at Meltham Station and a regular shuttle bus brings you to Maylands.)

We're sharing with ACF and the newly formed Friends of the Earth (Perth). A Permaculture course is about to transform the backyard. A Reconciliation group is also going to be based here. We anti-nukers are enjoying being seen as part of the wider environment movement. We always knew we were of course, but could sometimes feel stuck in a little corner of our own.

WHAT DO WE SELL?
Anti -Nuke T-shirts, skivvies and windcheaters inc. little kids' sizes, native plants for local soils, organic vegie seedlings, organic East Timorese coffee, greeting cards on recycled paper and budget & eco-friendly bulk cleaning products - vinegar, bicarb. soda, & Planet Ark dish and clothes washing products.

We've got heaps of free info on a wide range of environmental issues. Do spread the word that we're a good place for young people to get material for school assignments. (Lots of free full colour booklets.)

WHO PAYS THE RENT???? (It's $1000 per month)
The rent is paid by WA supporters who make one-off or monthly tax-deductible donations via the ACF specifically for this purpose. The WA centre has to be entirely self-sufficient, and our sales come nowhere near our rent. You can make a tax-deductible credit-card donation by phoning ACF 1800 332 510. Be sure to say it's for the Environment House in WA. Or if you don't want to donate via phone, call us at CANNWA to have an ACF donation form sent out.

CANNWA and FRIENDS OF THE EARTH
CANNWA has also become part of the Friends of the Earth (Perth). FoE is a federation of autonomous groups in 68 countries, an environmental organisation with a strong emphasis on social justice. It's a major player in the Australian and global anti-nuclear movement. CANNWA is one of 5 current FoE 'working groups' in Perth, the others being Biotechnology Under Scrutiny, WA Climate Change Action Network, Pollution Action Network and Contaminated Sites Alliance. (We'll still use the CANNWA name for many purposes. CANNWA/FoE is still a member group of ANAWA.)

ANTI-NUKE & GREENHOUSE ISSUES
In the face of the nuclear industry's propaganda that it's the answer to the greenhouse problem, and for other obvious environmental reasons, a lot of anti-nuclear activists are finding themselves trying to keep up with - and wanting to apply their tried and true public awareness-raising methods to greenhouse issues as well.

OUR CITY STALLS & OTHER STALLS
Our regular Friday stalls outside the WA Art Gallery now have both anti-nuclear and greenhouse materials. The public seem equally interested. If you'd like to campaign on nuclear, greenhouse or both issues (somewhere other than the City) we'll help you with materials. Or, tell us if you hear of good stall opportunities out your way and would like us to come complete with stall table etc. Individually or in a little local group you might consider being part of our friendly non-formal WA Climate Change Action Network either as part of FoE or not, whichever suits you.

SLAVE LABOUR
Staffed by a collective of volunteers, our opening hours are currently
Wed - Fri 10.30-5.30 and Sat 10-2.
We're hoping to extend these as we find more good people for the roster. We always have a back-up person in the building when a vollie is in the shop. There are many ways you can help, even if you can't put in a half day on the shop roster. Ideas for sale items are very welcome.

If you'd like to be involved in the shop collective please call
Rachael, Brenda or Rob on 9271 4488

Fax 9271 9005 email nfreewa@iinet.net.au
If your message isn't returned within half a day or so please call Brenda or Rob at home on 9271 1977.
